We use Basecamp for asynchronous communications to the project group. It contains a message board, files section and tools for recording milestones, to dos, chat, Time tracking and a writeboard.
Each tool can be useful for a project team.
- The Message board produces a chronological history of conversations and includes the option of selecting a limited audience for the message as well as copying the IA Institute Board of Directors.
- To Do and Milestones are effective ways to manage outstanding tasks and stay on target for completion of goals.
- Chat is helpful for communicating in real time with disperse teams, but some teams prefer Skype. We haven't tested Basecamp Chat against Skype, NetMeeting or similar programs, so we leave it up to teams to decide what to use.
- We would love feedback on the Time tracking function. Who is using it? How are you using it? It is not as robust as MS Project (go Gannt chart function, just lists of dates and log notes), but possibly useful for keeping on track and on scope.
Note two caveats when using Basecamp as a project management tool:
- The Volunteer Wiki has replaced the writeboard for most projects. The wiki is simply more robust.
- Files posted to Basecamp are only accessible to the project team. To post files for public access, you need to upload them to the iainstitute.org website. For FTP access or to have someone post a file for you, please contact .
